In 1951, six years after the end of World War II, Luigi Colangelo Petrone, the eldest of five siblings from a small town in Salerno, Italy, decided to emigrate to Venezuela at the age of just 19. Leaving his family behind, he traveled with little more than a small suitcase but with big dreams of prosperity.
Upon arriving in Caracas, Venezuela, Luigi’s first job was as a blacksmith, working with forged iron. However, after suffering a serious accident, he rethought his career and discovered a new passion for carpentry. Despite the challenges of adapting to a new culture, it only took him 11 years to establish his own furniture manufacturing company, Fábrica de Muebles Tejerías, in 1962.
In 1976, Luigi and Nina made the decision to send their eldest son, Giuseppe “Pepe,” to New York to pursue his education. Pepe attended middle school and later high school at the prestigious High School of Art & Design in Manhattan. After graduating in 1986 at the age of 17, he returned to Venezuela to work in his father’s company, Fábrica de Muebles Tejerías. Pepe brought fresh ideas and energy, driving new projects such as mass production of bedroom, dining room, kitchen, and seating furniture.
The 1980s and 1990s marked a period of significant growth for Fábrica de Muebles Tejerías, establishing the company as one of the most respected furniture manufacturers in Venezuela.
In 1997, Pepe took the next step in expanding the business by opening a new branch of Fábrica de Muebles Tejerías on Isla de Margarita, Venezuela. Recognizing a gap in the market and the growing demand due to the booming construction and tourism industries, he saw the potential for the company to thrive in this new location. The local market’s needs shaped the direction of this new phase, and the company began offering additional services in carpentry, metalworking, and upholstery for hotels, restaurants, and residential properties.
In 1999, while on Isla de Margarita, Pepe met Nathalia, who was managing a well-known American furniture franchise. She had helped establish a store on the island. With her vast experience in the industry, Nathalia became a key partner, contributing valuable insights and strategies to the company’s continued growth.
